They look like they would be good road trip vehicles. They just need more wood paneling.

I think I'll pass on that wood paneling

My moms old one was great until a road trip to Tennessee killed the transmission.

So maybe not so great road trip vehicles. How is the Outback?

My Outback is a great car, but nowhere near as comfortable on a trip as her old Flex. At least I don't have to worry about the Outback catastrophically grenadeing itself.

How many miles were on it? I've only seen stellar reviews about these cars thus far when it comes to road trips.

Ford fixed it, but not very well. The pano roof also leaked creating mold inside the car. She ended up taking it to Carmax, and told them of the issues. 1 week later it was Carmax quality certified, still with a leaky moonroof which ford claimed was caused by a deformed roof caused by a factory defect.

They are, apart from having Satan's own headrests.

Soooo if it's a deformed roof did they pay for you to get a new car or just tell her to deal with it? I honestly want that roof. Quite possibly the only "must have" option when I go hunting for one. My budge only allows for a used first gen by the end of the year hopefully so I'll definitely be on the lookout for any potential mold.

They told my mom to deal with it because according to ford it is completely acceptable for a 4 year old car to leak. And since she bought it used (cpo) she couldn't lemon law it. Carmax paid her above kbb, so she took the money, and leased a Volvo.

If you're going to buy one, avoid the 2009 at all costs.

Thanks for the heads up. I read they made a few subtle changes in 2010 due to customer complaints. I never get something completely new anyway because I want someone else to experience the kinks. Only reason I had gotten a 2013 Civic was because I knew underneath all the sheetmetal is the same body they've been using since 2006.

Just don't go into it expecting the same reliability as your civic.

Oh but of course not. I have a back up car for when something goes wrong. My trusty current winter beater of $800. 1995 Saturn SL2 with a manual transmission. Have to keep two cars at all times.

Sounds like you have your bases covered. If you end up with a flex, get the newest one you can afford.

Most definitely. I also want AWD and Leather so it's looking like 2012 is the best I'll do for now. I have to play catch up with my bro who got the car he wanted on his first go, a 2013 Black SEL Taurus. Who knows, by the end of the year a 2013 may fall into my lap. Of course being a Jalop I was hunting down Ecoboosts. Unfortunately the ones in my range have ludicrous miles on them and I don't trust first gen turbos in the least bit. They all seem to be about 80k-85k miles and up. I have a $15k budget and I have no plans on getting something hire than 60k miles.

It's not that simple though, you can easily get a Eco boost upto over 500 bhp. No longer just a simple mini van car thing ;) I want one too..but I want to put it on nice wheels and airbag it, then get a bagged trailer to tow behind it and tow my race car, because that would be awesome

We had a FWD and it was perfectly fine in snow with stock all season tires. With the budget you have, I'd reccomend finding a base SE model, and then adding either a Roadwire or Katzkin leather kit.

Thanks for your idea of trying to get the newest one I can afford. Definitely looking towards getting a 2013 model towards the end of the year now. I didn't realize so many small improvements were made in the update. Better steering feedback, fixed the head restraint issue from the first gen and also upgraded the brakes, just to name a few. I came across a Limited trim for $16,500 with almost 45k on the dash. Provides much hope that I'll find exactly what I'm looking for once that time comes.

The headrest issue was fixed with the 2011 model. My mom ended up ordering 2011 headrests for her 2009, and it made the seats perfect. Hopefully you can end up lucking out with a good Flex.
